The small North Yorkshire town of Filey was once a fishing village lying between Scarborough and Bridlington. It was only a small village until the 18th century when tourists arrived at Scarborough in their droves and sought a more peaceful seaside setting down the road in Filey. In the middle of the 19th century the village staged race meetings, beginning with a 2 day meeting on Tuesday 16th and Wednesday 17th July 1850. The programme consisted of horse racing on the first day, and horse and boat races on day two. The meeting on Wednesday 24th August 1853 saw the opening Filey Bay Stakes won by Mr Johnson’s Lola Montee. Races continued for the next 3 years, with the last meeting held on the sands on Monday 11th August 1856, and the final Scarborough Stakes won by Alice. |
